Archbishop Tauran Calls for International Guarantees
VATICAN CITY, AUGUST 9 (ZENIT.org).- This morning Nabil Shaath, the National Palestinian Authority's Minister for International Co-operation, visited Archbishop Jean Louis Tauran in the Vatican, to inform him on Palestine's evaluation of the recent Camp David negotiations, as well as on the future of the Middle East peace process.
In a press statement, Fr. Ciro Benedettini, Assistant Director of the Vatican Press Office, explained that "the guest described at length the positive aspects of the dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis, as well as the obstacles that impeded the meeting having a happy ending."
"For his part, Archbishop Tauran confirmed the Vatican's support of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people. Moreover, he reiterated the importance the Apostolic See gives to the holy places of the three great religions in the Holy Land, whose unique and sacred character should be guaranteed by the international community, exactly the way it is expressed in the Preamble of the Basic Agreement, signed between the Vatican and the PLO on February 15, 2000."
