VATICAN, Oct. 17, 00 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Jozef Tomko, the prefect of the Congregation for Evangelization, today opened a conference on international missionary work by emphasizing the themes of the recent Vatican statement Dominus Iesus.
Cardinal Tomko affirmed that "dialogue with other faiths is part of the evangelical mission of the Church." However, he deplored the tendency among some theologians to see this dialogue as an end in itself. He also rejected the notion that interfaith dialogue "marks the end to any notion of the superiority of Christianity."
"These issues speak to the heart of missionary work and the Christian faith," the cardinal said. He lamented that some Christian theologians, by abandoning such central elements of their own faith, have made true dialogue more difficult. "What sort of dialogue can be undertaken by those who renounce their own identity and their own position?" he asked.
