JERUSALEM, Jun 25, 01 (CWNews.com) - A Palestinian leader was killed by a high-tech bomb on Sunday, raising new fears about a complete breakdown in the tentative cease-fire that now prevails in the Holy Land.

Osama Jawabri died when an explosive device was set off in a public telephone booth he was using in the West Bank city of Nablus. Details of the incident were unclear, but Palestinian leaders strongly suspected the Israeli government had planted the bomb.

Spokesman for the Palestinian National Authority charged that the killing was a deliberate assassination, in violation of the cease-fire terms.

Jawabri had been one of several Palestinian leaders wanted by Israel for arrest in connection with recent terrorist activities. The failure of Palestinian leaders to crack down on terrorists has been a key complaint of Israeli diplomats in the Middle East peace talks.
