GENEVA, Apr 8, 02 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican's representative at the UN's International Labor Organization has called for the international body to monitor human-rights issues in the Palestinian territories.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said that the UN should "demand a scrupulous respect for human rights" in the midst of armed conflict between Israeli and Palestinian forces. "This is a responsibility that touches all of us," he said.

The Vatican envoy said that the Holy See "condemns all acts of terrorism, whomever is responsible." The Vatican also "disapproved of the conditions of injustice and humiliation imposed on the Palestinians," he continued, and calls for "proportionality in the use of the legitimate means of defense."
