Franciscans Launch Prayer Campaign for Mideast Peace

JERUSALEM, May 2, 02 (CWNews.com) - Franciscan priests in the Holy Land will offer 300 Masses for the cause of peace, to be celebrated in three ancient basilicas.

Father Giovanni Battistelli, the Franciscan Custos of the Holy Land, announced that the campaign of prayer was a response to the visit of Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who arrived in Jerusalem on May 2 as a special envoy from Pope John Paul II.

The Franciscan priests will celebrate the 300 Masses at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The last church is the site of a month-long siege.
