BAGHDAD, Iraq, APRIL 10, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The papal nuncio in Baghdad says the great challenge Iraq now faces is its legal void.
«There is still some sporadic fighting in the outskirts of the city; there are, in fact, pockets of resistance,» Archbishop Fernando Filoni told the Fides news service today.
Three weeks after the start of the U.S.-led invasion in Iraq, Saddam Hussein's regime no longer controls Baghdad.
«In the center of the city the problem now is the legislative void which has been created,» Archbishop Filoni said. «There is no police force; looting continues. From this point of view the situation is worrying.»
«With regard to the future of Iraq, there is some uncertainty because decisions are taken elsewhere.»
«The Christian community lives the same situation as all Iraqis,» he said. «During the 20 days of bombing many poor people, Muslims as well as Christians, took shelter in churches and parish buildings. The whole Church in Iraq is here to give comfort and support to the people, so sorely tried.»
