VATICAN, Mar 3, 03 (CWNews.com) - In a terse public announcement on Monday, March 3, the Holy See disclosed that a Russian diplomat had visited the Vatican to discuss the crisis in Iraq, and noted a «convergence» in positions.

Aleksei Meskov, the Russian undersecretary of foreign affairs, met on Monday with Msgr. Pietro Parolin, his counterpart at the Vatican Secretariat of State. The Vatican statement said that the Russian diplomat «wished to inform the Holy See about the position of the Russian government on the international situation at the present moment.»

The Vatican statement went on to note a «convergence» between the positions of the Holy See and the Russian government. The Vatican also spoke of a «convergence of positions» after a meeting between Pope John Paul and Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar on February 27. (On paper, the public positions of Spain and Russia are quite different; Spain has given strong support to the US demands for aggressive against Iraq; Russia has been reluctant to endorse the possibility of military action.)
